Dr Duell graduated Cum Laude with undergraduate degrees in Mathematics, Physics, and a minor in Chemistry from Willamette University in Salem, OR. He received his medical degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and completed residency training at the University of Chicago and OHSU. He completed a research and clinical fellowship in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Clinical Nutrition under the mentorship of the late Edwin Bierman, MD and Jack Oram, PhD. He has been involved in clinical and translational research related to disorders of lipid metabolism, novel therapies for treatment of dyslipidemia, genetic dyslipidemia, diabetes, hyperhomocysteinemia, and obesity.
He is the head of the Lipid Disorders Clinic, director of the LDL/Lipoprotein Apheresis Unit, and director of the Lipid-Atherosclerosis Laboratory at the Oregon Health and Science University. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association and the National Lipid Association. He is currently the President of the Pacific Lipid Association and member of the board of directors of the National Lipid Association.
