Though still much too low, Lp(a) testing levels are increasing, and helping to boost initiation and intensification of lipid lowering therapy. This slide deck highlights the importance of Lp(a) testing in primary care so that patients with elevated levels can benefit from potential reclassification of their cardiovascular risk and adaptation of their treatment goals.
Through a series of case studies, this slide deck considers the evidence linking key risk factors to elevated Lp(a) (ethnicity, genetics, menopause, kidney diseases, thyroid disease) and, in the absence of specific Lp(a) targeting agents, the guidelines-based risk management recommendations for patients in high Lp(a) risk groups.
Patients with elevated Lp(a) are up to three times more likely to be diagnosed with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease than those with lower levels, with accompanying increased mortality.
