Specialist in Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition in adults. PhD in Medicine and Master in Clinical Nutrition. International Fellow of the National Lipid Association.
He started working in Lipids in 1990 at the Lipid Clinic, Internal Medicine Department, Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Madrid, Spain. During his stay in Spain, he co-founded the Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation, and is currently a member of its scientific committee, actively collaborating in the SAFEHEART study (the Spanish FH study). In 2014 he moved to Santiago de Chile, as staff of the Department of Nutrition at Clinica Las Condes, and then Head of the department from 2016 to January 2020. His current position is Co-director of the Center for Advanced Metabolic Medicine and Nutrition in Santiago de Chile.
Dr Alonso is the President of the Chilean Atherosclerosis Working Group Corporation. Chair for the Federation of the Americas, International Atherosclerosis Society; National Leader for the European Atherosclerosis Society FH Study Collaboration; President of the Iberoamerican Familial Hypercholesterolemia Network. His main research areas and topics of interest are related to Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Genetics, Lipoprotein(a), cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic syndrome, obesity and its complications, lipid-lowering therapies and management of obesity and related disorders.
