Professor David Hare is a graduate of the University of Melbourne, subsequently undertaking post-graduate studies at the University of Melbourne and Guy’s Hospital, London. He has been the Coordinator of Cardiovascular Research for the University of Melbourne and a Clinical Cardiologist at Austin Health, where he manages a full range of cardiac patients from Acute Coronary Syndromes to Heart Failure, and is also Director of Secondary Prevention Programs.
He has a long-standing interest in lipid management, both clinically and in the basic vascular laboratory. His interest in the primary and secondary prevention of heart disease included an appointment as Medical Director, National Heart Foundation of Australia (Vic. Div.) from 1983-1990. He also has a long-standing interest in the psycho-social and behavioural aspects of heart disease and is the only cardiologist in the world who, during his cardiology training, also fully trained in psychiatry. In addition, he undertakes collaborative research in heart failure, exercise, psychosocial, cardiac surgical, diabetes, renal, respiratory and preventative medicine. In 2011 he was awarded the Distinguished Scientist Medal of the Austin Medical Research Foundation. He generally has about 500 citations per year from his own investigator-initiated research.
